Aviation Policy aims to build a stronger sector –Minister

The Minister of Aviation Stella Oduah has said the main thrust of the 2013 New Civil Aviation Policy, NCAP is to develop strategic plans to build a stronger, dynamic and liberalized aviation sector that will meet present and future challenges in the sector.

The Aviation minister disclosed this at the Public Presentation Friday of the 2013 NCAP, she said “the goal of government is to put in place an Aviation sector that delivers socio-economic benefits to Nigerians”.

She recalled that “in November 2012 the Ministry of Aviation in line with the Transformation Agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan inaugurated a technical review committee to develop a sustainable policy framework for the Nigerian Aviation Sector”.

The technical was composed of experts from both private and public sectors of the Aviation industry.

Princess Oduah mentioned that the review exercise became necessary as the NCAP was last reviewed in 2001 and the global and local aviation industry has experienced safety and security challenges as well as technological developments.

The policy review exercise revealed that the Nigerian Aviation industry needed to be restructured to enable it drive economic growth for the country as well as remain globally competitive.   These objectives, the minister noted will be effectively achieved through greater participation of the private sector in the Nigerian Aviation industry.

“The Federal ministry of Aviation is therefore repositioning the industry to be largely driven by the private sector” said the Minister.  She added that the policy review exercise clearly showed that the government’s vision for dynamic, self-sustaining air transport system is achievable.

Princess Oduah said she was pleased to present the reviewed NCAP and urged all stakeholders to join in its implementation emphasizing that “the Federal government of Nigeria is conscious of the fact that sustainable implementation of this policy is would require the collective participation of all stakeholders in the Nigerian Aviation sector”.

Kano Airport ready for commissioning - FAAN

The Managing director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Mr George Uriesi has said that the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport is ready for commissioning.

Mr Uriesi made this statement while on inspection of the remodelling projects going on across the airport terminals across the country.

In a brief interraction with the staff, he charged them to adopt a new attitude that will compliment the current transformational changes taking place in the aviation sector, challenging them to take ownership of the remodelled Airport terminals in order to maximise its full benefits and realise the corporate objectives of the Authority.

"We cannot carry over old nonchalant  attitudes into the new world class airport terminals being constructed." Uriesi stated.

The FAAN Managing Director had  earlier visited Abuja, Jos, YoIa and Kaduna for on-the spot assessment of the remodelling projects, and was led around the airport by Regional General Manager, Ibrahim Danyabu.

Uriesi called on all aviation stakeholders to take advantage of the new facility for wealth creation adding that the remodelled airport will boost economic activities and create employement to thousands of people.

The Mallam Aminu Kano International airport is among the first phase of airport remodelling project which comprises 11 airports of 22 earmarked for remodelling in the aviation transformation agenda by aviation Minister Princess Stella Oduah.

FAAN to embark on Professional Staff assessment.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN)has embarked on 'professional' assessment of the staff of the Authority, to equip them with the necessary knowledge and skills that would ensure the success of the transformation agenda in the aviation industry.

According to the General Manager, Corporate Communications of FAAN, Mr Yakubu Dati,the assessment exercise entails a rigorous process that would enable staff key into the transformation agenda and identify their expected roles in the aviation master plan.

He pointed out that the Federal government in realization of the fact that the massive improvement in the infrastructure at the airports without corresponding added value in human resources, has made it imperative for staff to re-orientate for the success of the aviation road map.

Dati said that FAAN remained committed to fulfilling its mission to be among the best airport groups in the world.
